> Q2 2009 Housing Vacancies & HomeownershipThe homeowner vacancy rate fell slightly during Q2 while the rental vacancy rate jumped to 10.6 percent and the (seasonally adjusted) homeownership rate fell to 67.3 percent. While there was a decline in the number of vacant and for-sale housing units during the quarter, the reality is that this simply masks a shift of formerly for-sale properties into the rental pool. When taking into account the considerable number of vacant housing units being held off of the market (specifically, the growth in such units over recent quarters), it is apparent that there has been precious little progress made on paring down what remain elevated inventories of vacant housing units, and any progress that has been made is at risk from what will remain a steady stream of foreclosures over coming quarters. © Mission Residential.
